Nothing But Knitting

Lest you think I have abandoned my current fav hobby, I post these pictures in proof. Unfortunately, you'll have til wait until after a certain December holiday for a glimpse of ALL the finished projects. I finished all my Christmas knitted gifts up and am on to a fun "Jack Frost" sweater for the youngest Princess. Thankfully she's down with pink even though right now orange would probably be her first pick!
Handwarmers for every princess!!
A dark purple ear-flap hat! She
really really wanted orange yarn, and
continues to mention the "orange hat",
so I will probably be making another
one of these!
A little purse for a sweet friend's b-day!
It's turquoise and cabled w/a black gingham ribbon.

Bless the Fates

So I hate the door to door salespeople that always seem to come right at nap time, school time, mealtime, or any other time that is inconvenient--and then they won't leave unless you're rude and then they have the audacity to be angry and put-out by your rudeness. Backing off the soap-box now.

So, today we're finishing up school and since I had heard the mail-lady a few minutes earlier, I told the girls I was heading out to collect the mail. I open the door just as one of the previously described salesman was about to knock, scaring the pants off of him and jumper off of me! I squawked, not only because of his unexpected presence, but also because at that same moment a huge "Gloria"* spider decided to descend right in front of me. I shut the door and whipped off my shoe and took care of the little pest. Meanwhile, I can hear the big pest gasping and laughing maniacally in my front yard. I opened the door and watched him try to catch his breath. He told me he had never been so scared in his life. (Yes, I have that affect on people--handy huh??) He then left with just handing me a brochure and not the sales pitch!! Hooray!

*Gloria was a pet spider I had from waaaaay back. One of those big black fuzzy ones with the white spots on their back. I kept her alive for a really long time (even caught live flies to sustain her), and then left her jar in the sun while on a trip to McD's and effectively baked her. Horrific then that I was a spider-murderer, horrific now that I actually had a pet spider. How's that for TMI??

What Can I Say?

It's been almost a month since I last blogged and every time I think of something to write about and then find time to write about it, I can't remember what it was. So there you go.

We've actually had an eventful September. We had the wonderful priviledge of seeing our nation's capitol and two of my sisters, and their families. The visit wasn't nearly long enough, but it was amazing and so much fun.

So anyway, here are some pictures from our trip and I will try and get more "with it" and get some real posting done.

A Case of the Blahs

While being the good parent that I am, and trying to sort out yet another fight amongst the princess', I hear this side of the story.

Queen: Okay, tell me why you're upset.

Princess #2 (with voice raised, and vein protruding from her little neck): Because I'm trying to set up my Sweet Streets and this BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH keeps sitting in my spot!!

So that sums it up, a direct quote. All I have to add is I'm glad she left the 5 year old swear words out and just used some "blah blah blahs" instead. I could learn from that.

It Never Fails

You get done with all the vacuuming (at one time!!) and as you are tucking the vacuum away, thinking proudly to yourself "wow, I actually got something done today", you see it. That tiny round, purple piece of guinea pig cage stuffing. The one that got away. ARGH!

Giggles

We have slowly begun school up again, just a few days last week and probably a few this week (if the girls are still alive--something for another day when I find my life humorous again). Most of the beginning of school for Princess #1 is a lot of review, so she's breezing through it.

Anyway, yesterday, she was working through her seatwork and all of a sudden got the giggles. And if you've heard her spontaneous giggle, you know it's very catching. So soon all four of us are laughing without really knowing why. Then she says, "I had to write the word "toot" three times!" Of course, Princess #2 seized the moment to get out her weekly potty-talk requirement as quickly as she could. Even Princess #3 got into the (dare I say fun?) and says, "once I tooted". [Insert gales of laughter from all three girls and the queen's frustration at needing to be responsible and NOT laughing at that little comment.]

And so here is my question for the void-why oh why are the "potty" words so funny to hear and funny to say?

Countertops and Floors . . . Oh My!!

My wonderful husband has been working hard these past couple weekends finishing up the last big bits of the kitchen remodel. Last weekend the long awaited countertops went on and my sink went in permanently! Yay!
Then this weekend, thanks to a fire out near where he works, he got an extra day off and got all the flooring done in the main area of the kitchen and then also through to the dinette. Today he made it up to the pantry. It looks so nice. It is Pergo, snap and lock tile. Wonderful stuff. Oh, and don't forget to check out my pretty new stove in the picture too, it's to the right of Princess #3!

I've Taught Her Well

Tonight, while clearing away more "stuff", so that he can potentially put in the new kitchen floor; my hubby found Princess #1's purse. He peeked inside and then shared the contents with me. All I can say is that she knows what a girl needs.

You need multiple shades and types of lip-gloss, lipstick, and other lip cosmetics. For instance you might need the lip-gloss ring to cover the accessorizing of the naked finger, and any lip care needs you may have when your purse isn't handy. You may also need extra bracelets or necklaces in neutral colors for that last minute outfit-completer. You will need a key ring, so you can get home again. But money . . . with those cute pouty lips and cute jewelry, what Daddy can say no to a stop at DQ?

At Long Last

I have great news! Our countertop laminate has found it's way to our local Home Depot! Hooray! (It has been back-ordered for about 3+ weeks.) For the past week, I have had my sink and d.w. thanks to my husband's resourcefulness. But once the real deal goes in, we'll be able to really settle into the kitchen. So exciting . . .

And now onto the new floor!

Princess #2 Turns 5!!

I'm having a hard time with this little gal getting so old, so fast. But she is thrilled to be 5, which means a friend party, and moving up to a new Sunday School class, and starting Kindergarten.

She had a great day! A wonderful "bride" cake thanks to a little help from some friends with a fully functional kitchen! A wonderful dinner and of course! wonderful presents.

Kitchen Remodel Update

Progress has been made on the kitchen--despite the frustration of waiting for the countertop laminate to make it's way to our local Home Depot. Tim Allen aka my wonderful husband, got the micro-hood installed. It has real fan speeds like lo, that really is lo, medium, and high--it is wonderful and HUGE! I am going to enjoy having it. The new stove is in the garage awaiting it's spot. And thanks to my hubby and dad's hard work Friday, the last of the cabinets have been put in. We have another friend who has been helping out as well. Like for instance he'll offer to come over to help unload the stove, and stay to hang a cabinet. So wonderful.

Enjoy the pictures. I am so excited about how it looks. So much so, that my vision of what it will look like has eclipsed my frustration over not having a sink or d.w. Or maybe it's all the take-out pizza we've had here lately . . .

My beloved micro-hood. :)

Knit Pics!

Here are some pictures of recently completed projects. The pink sweater is for me! It was my first lace garment. It's got 3/4 length sleeves and a cropped waist. It was done quite a while ago, I just needed to block it and sew on the button. So I did that this weekend at long last.

The purple sweater is a Debbie Bliss pattern done up for Princess #2. She chose the pattern and the yarn and it turned out great. It looks really cute on her. I did most of the knitting on this one during our trek out to MN and back. I finished the last stitch just before entering ID. It is long sleeved and cropped looking. The 4 inches of ribbing around it really look great! It closes with a pin (the flower!). Now I'm working on two Christmas gifts. I got frustrated with one after the repeated ripping out of the same 12 rows--ARGH, so I started another project. Here are the pictures:

Remodeling Phase I

Well, just about the minute we got back from MN, the kitchen project began! YEAH!

As most of you know this has been a long time coming. For about 18 months actually. It all started with the dishwasher leaking and then the subsequent removal of the leaky dishwasher only to discover that this leak was no stranger to our house. Then we knew we'd have to replace the pretty pretty Pergo that we installed after we bought this house 6 years ago. Heavy sigh. Then we thought, why don't we just remodel the kitchen's floorplan, upgrade the cabinets, and make the kitchen how we'd like it. And that was 18 months ago.

Phase I has involved the disgusting chore of tearing out rotten sub-floor, replacing that, and taking out old cabinetry and replacing it bit by bit. An hour after work here and there and heavy on the weekend. Thankfully my dad came over this weekend and helped us out or we're pretty sure we'd still have a gaping hole in the center of the kitchen. Enjoy the pictures . . .

Hello Again

Well, we are back, not quite back to normal, but define normal. For those unaware, we made our first cross-country car trip at the end of June and got back earlier this week. Is it possible to feel jet-lag when only crossing two time zones? This is a question I've been pondering. I feel as if I'm walking through mud, and my girls can attest to the crabbiness that has over-taken me.

In all actuality the trips out there and then back home again went really well (thank you God for portable DVD players!!). The princess' all behaved (just a few minor fights &/or irrational screaming) and really seemed to enjoy pausing their movie to see what their crazy parents were pointing out this time. The king and I realized that we are indeed getting older if we can find eastern North Dakota interesting . . .

On our trip back we stopped at De Smet, SD where Laura Ingalls Wilder lived in the "Little Town on the Prairie". For the Laura "fans" out there, we got to walk through the actual "surveyor's house" where Laura and her family stayed their first winter on the prairie. Of course the house was filled with things that "looked just like what Laura, Mary, Ma or Pa might have had". We had to chuckle about that. We got to go into a replica of the Brewster school where Laura taught while Almanzo began to court her. The local historical society recently acquired the original school where Laura and Carrie attended in town, so we got to peek in there and see the renovation being started. They managed to uncover part of the original blackboard, so that was fun to see. And finally we got a really interesting tour of the house that Pa built for Ma after Laura married Almanzo. It was full of original Ingalls/Wilder things and the tour guides gave a lot of the family's history. Like what happened to Mary, Carrie, and Grace, etc.
Princess #1 just soaked up the information like a sponge. It was fun for her to see the books come to life.

Then the second day we stopped at Mt. Rushmore and toured that area. The renovations that they have done since I was there last were very impressive. It was fun to take the trail around the base of the mountain and listen in on a Ranger-given history lesson about the mountain.

And two days later we arrived home. Safe and sound. Grateful to be home again. Thankful for air conditioning and long-lost, much missed toys to play with again.

More to come--the king has started the kitchen renovation (the chorus said "Hallelujah"), so I'll have plenty to blog about!

I'm An Auntie!

My younger sister and her husband welcomed their little daughter just a tad before midnight last night! The baby is healthy and doing really well, and so is my sis. The baby was 8 lbs. 11 oz. so it's a good thing she decided to come 10 days early!

I can't wait to at the very least see a picture of my brand new niece, much less get my hands on her! The latter will have to unfortunately wait a bit.

Thanks for your prayers . . .

Happy (almost) Birthday!

I just got word from my expectant sister that baby is on her way! Hooray!

Please pray with me for a smooth and (dare I pray) quick first delivery for my sis, her husband, and their new little one.

I'll keep you posted . . .

Making Sense of the Noise

Lately, the castle has been so noisy. It's irritating to say the least. By dinner time yesterday, my external noise assimilator had malfunctioned leaving me with a horrible headache and a crabby disposition. I really hate it when I feel as if I have to yell to be heard, and then I'm still not heard, well okay listened to. Finally after being able to get control of the hyper princess' after dinner and holding their attention long enough to communicate my displeasure with their antics, the oldest princess apologized.

Things settled down for bedtime, just in time for the first thunderstorm in a long while to rumble in. Of course, my hubby was off helping a friend so I was solo amidst the irrational tears of Princess #1. Soon Princess #3 picks up on the tears and drama and decides to add her own. I tell them all that it's just the thunder telling us that he's coming to cool us off. That appeases #3, and she loudly shouts "I DON'T LIKE THE RUMBLE BUMBLE!" So now we have a new catch phrase around the house. Thankfully #1 decides to suck it up and be brave, and they are all down for the night. Peace and quiet at last.

So today the noise returns! Happy noise today, not screaming and being obnoxiously hyper like yesterday. The girls' were listening to "Silly Songs" today and the older princess' must have replayed the "Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" song about 100 times. (and you know, I never exaggerate!) Well, the baby princess picked up on one line: "And I never kissed a chipmunk" and sang it, oh about 100 times. Too funny! Then I overheard the older two playing Polly's and saying at the top of their lungs: "No, she has AMMONIA!"

Happy noise I can deal with . . .

Cute Stuff

The girls in all of their various stages, ages, and personalities never cease to amuse me. The latest cute stuff has been:

Princess #1 talking about the "calzones" she is getting from her bike handles.
(calzones=calluses)

Princess #2 telling me that she found my wedding dress in my closet (she has rest time in our room now and has been busy investigating it instead of laying F.O.B.), so out of curiosity, I ask her to show me, knowing full well the wedding dress is not there . . . and she pulls out a long white nighty that I had shoved in the back of my closet behind several winter coats along with other few unmentionables. Then she asks why there is lace there and there, and says, you must have had a slip under that for your wedding day. "Er, um, yes honey you're exactly right!! Now let's go downstairs and I want you to stare into this bright light for a second!"

Princess #3 loves to count, it usually goes like this 1, 2, 4, 5, 2, 7, 8, TWO! Her latest is counting her steps as she goes down the stairs. One (takes the first step) . . . THREE (takes the second step) . . . and then repeats all the way down the stairs!

A Little Pick Me Up

While eating lunch earlier in the week we were talking about ages. Specifically ages of the cats and dogs and then grandparents, etc. Then it turned to how old mommy was. I said I was in my thirties, then not skipping a beat, Princess #2 chimes in with "I'm in my fours". It was stated so matter-of-factly, that I burst out laughing which led to the other princess' copying their sister, and even more laughter.

It was one of those moments where everything was as it should be, laughter, happiness, no fighting . . . just enjoying one another.

Bike Rides and Scream Fests (and not necessarily in that order)

Now that Princess #1 has mastered solo-riding, I got the bright idea that we should institute a daily bike ride, and do it first thing, so that it didn't get swept under the rug with every other good intention that I have.

So yesterday was our first day of trying it out, and of course when Princess #2 discovered that she would have to ride in the bike trailer rather than pedaling, she flipped. So while she was in the house having her fit and carrying on about the "stupid bike ride" and "stupid exercise", I was trying to hitch up the trailer to my bike. During the hitching process, Princess #3 was deceptively calm and excited about the trek. I should have known better than to get my hopes up when Princess #2 recovered from her tirade (after being told she could bring along the entire box of "Littlest Pet Shop" toys to entertain herself), and Princess #3 happily climbed in and let me buckle her. The happiness ended there. She didn't want to be buckled, she didn't want to share the "LPS" toys with her sister, she didn't want to go in the trailer anymore. AWWW!!

After violently opening the trailer opening and fixing the offensive buckle, I almost gave into the screaming and quit. Then I remembered that swimsuit weather is on the horizon and closed the trailer screen, called for Princess #1 and we took off. The ENTIRE trip, Princess #3 yelled and screamed "MOMMY-NO! NO-NO MOMMY! MOMMY STOP!", you get the picture, and it's not pretty. I am pretty sure that if people weren't already up and had a window cracked to let in the fresh morning air, they were rudely awoken. Or if they were enjoying a nice cup of coffee on their patio, their peace was interrupted by my daughter. But, hey, I got my exercise in, and today not a single fuss out of anyone. In fact, as I huffed and puffed into the driveway, Princess #2 asks for another swing around the block and Princess #3 says "yeah!". Go figure.

The Score: Queen: 2 Princess': 0

Princess #1 Turns 7!!

It's been a busy couple of weeks. Princess #1 celebrated her birthday May 4th. She has mastered riding her bike solo (with a minimum of wipe outs) and her second top front tooth is coming in (finally). It's fun to see what she's going to look like with both big "Bucky Beaver" teeth. She is enjoying being 7!

Say A Prayer

Well, if you think of me today, say a prayer! For once we're all healthy, so it's not a health related crisis. Today is the day we are rotating beds, rooms, and all of that. So Princess #1 will have her own room, Princess #2 is headed for the top bunk, and Princess #3 is out of the crib and into the bottom bunk. AND I AM SCARED! Freaked out is more like it!!

We took a trip over the mountains this past weekend and got the loft bed for Princess #1 and Daddy set it up last night, the mattress will be delivered at 11:30-ish (she is really into saying "ish" for some reason) today, so we have no more excuses, save my sanity, which is obviously going to be shot.

I am hoping that the anticipation of camping out upstairs for bedtime and rest-time for the weeks to come is exaggerated and that all goes smoothly. But I think that for now I will settle on the darker side of things and be really happy when everything lightens up.

P.S. Did I mention that Princess #3 is moving out of the crib??? How did this happen??

Easter Photos

I know, I know, it's way past Easter, but hey, we spent the week after Easter dealing with pink eye and a double ear infection in Princess #3. However good news on the health front, we have reached our family deductible for health care (please don't ask how much, it's that depressing), so I am sure that from here on out everyone will be healthy. . . at least until the new calendar year starts up!

I managed to get all the dresses made up in time to flirt with the crazy notion that I might be able squeak in a dress for myself. Thankfully all I did was flirt!

Here are the princess' in all their Easter finery:

Meet Dotty Harold . . . and Cookie Monster

Easter weekend was an eventful one as far as new pets for our family and extended family!
Princess #1 and #2 split the cost of a guinea pig (a bargain at only $5!!) and purchased "Dotty Harold". So here she is . . .

And during the Easter egg hunt at Nanny and Papa's we got to see up close and personal a brand new baby calf. Princess #3 got the honor of naming the new baby, and she chose "Cookie Monster"! So here she or he is . . .

I couldn't believe how friendly the little he or she was! It nuzzled the girls as they petted it. Then mama cow "Wilma" had enough and told it to get up and get going.

My Sanity

Here are some pictures of what keeps me sane! The latest knitting projects that I have completed. I finished the teeny tiny felted tote yesterday and it is teeny tiny, even more like eensey weensey. . .
**I updated the photos of the tiny tote to show it's size in relation to my cell phone. Thanks for the idea Laughter Thoughts !

And the little teddy bear (he's about 7" tall) and the mary jane slippers:

Sick of Sick

Let me re-cap the past week for you all. A week ago Sunday we were "ushered" (really ushered, by the head usher!) out of church to rescue our eldest, who had thrown up during Sunday School (thankfully she made it to the bathroom in time). Then I got her stomach bug the next day. Princess #2 started in with a runny nose a day or so later and passed that on to me as well. Saturday she woke up with pink eye. Sunday the youngest and oldest princess' are coughing. Which brings us to today, all four of us blowing noses, coughing and cranky! I am so sick of being and dealing with sick of any kind!!! Thankfully the weather reflects my mood and health (dark and drippy), so I am not feeling frustrated being stuck in the house as well.

Enough of that . . .

On another note, Murphy's Law of sewing has struck again! As I am working on Princess #1's Easter dress yesterday feeling all smug as the first cap sleeve pops perfectly into her dress, wouldn't you know that the second one would not go in for anything. Being swept up with euphoria over the first attempt on the first sleeve being perfect, I neglected to lower my expectations for the second sleeve and Murphy struck. There is one pleat that I cannot get out. I have ripped and resewed twice and then spot-ripped and resewed to no avail and I decided that the sleeve could win this round! Her dress is made from a vintage 1950's pattern and is very cute. I am eager to finish it.

I got Princess #3's dress cut out today and it looks to be a fairly simple pattern. No extra gathering or fussing thank you Lord! It is a duro-style dress and I am excited to get it going. I have purchased three duro-style patterns for myself, I just need motivation to get them sewed up!

However, it's hard to be motivated to sew when the knitting has been going so well. After completing a couple of sweaters, I decided to do some smaller projects and it has been a lot of fun. I've made up some adorable mary jane baby slippers and a teddy bear and am now just about to felt for my first time. I made a little stripey bag to try felting. I'll post some pictures when I get it completed.

So despite the illnesses, I am surviving. Of course with all this sewing and knitting, I mean illness, housework has become non-existent . . . I guess it's the price you pay!

One of the BEST sounds . . .

. . . is hearing your daughter laughing out loud while reading a book to herself!! I am in the kitchen, Princess #1 is in the office having rest time and I can hear her infectious laugh from here. It definitely must be a good book!

Yeah for Baby Legs!!

Well, I bought some baby legs a week or so ago. Basically they are just leg warmers that fit a baby's legs from ankle to chubby thigh. (The packaging states they fit size 0-10 years.) I must say that they are wonderful for potty training. We have thrown out the pull-ups with the exception of nap and bedtime and are just using "big girl panties" with Princess #3. Of course some days are better than others as far as accidents, but I've noticed that if she's in pants, she tends to have more accidents. So when we're home it's baby legs with a skirt and she's doing great.

This morning has been one of our best days in real panties and I have needed a good one here lately as far as potty training is concerned.

My Day

So here is a run down of my day:

1.) No school done.

2.) Swim lessons.

3.) Successful trip to Home Depot.

4.) Lunch and still no school done.
(Some AWANA done after much cajoling by queen and carrying on by the princess')

5.) Rest time--yay all kids down and younger girls' napping-safe to assume Princess #2 will not be cavorting upstairs and brushing her teeth in bed today!

6.) Hear youngest princess at same time I realize that the last 4 rows of knitting (over 600 stitches) will have to be taken out because of a mistake! ARGH!!!

7.) Get princess' settled into afternoon TV time and call soccer director. Finally get through to soccer director (after 3 days of trying) and find out that Princess #1's coach is no longer coaching as of today!!

8.) Yummy dinner--taco soup and cornbread. Still no school done. Princess #1 will be doing a double load tomorrow-lucky me!

9.) AWANA carpool comes for older two princess' while I am discovering that I washed a large load of unmentionables and dried them, only to then notice that the load cycle had been set on "mini" (amount of water) with full strength laundry soap. . . hmm, wonder if they will be itchy, and decide to chance it.

10.) Decide to sit down and blog before I fold the questionable laundry.

Hope your day was a good one!

A Poop Story

It's been a while since I've had a good poop story to share, so I felt the urge so to speak. (Sorry I'm kind of in a slap happy mood here as I type. It's been a long weekend. My hubby and I are both sick with the cold that the girls have had and continue to have, and I'm a little stir-crazy. I told him today that I want to sit and watch TV that is inappropriate for little eyes to see, since I have to sit through adult inappropriate TV (namely PBS kids and the same Little People video over and over . . .) when they are sick. He agreed. But I digress . . .)

Anyway, consider yourself warned about what is to follow. So I am doing school with the oldest Princess, when Princess #3 comes in and tells me that she needs to go potty. I am ecstatic-she very seldom asks, and she wasn't feeling well, so I wasn't pushing the potty, and here she was asking! (Oh I forgot to tell you, I have decided to start wearing more dresses and skirts (for no really good reason other than just because I'm in the mood for a change) and had this same morning had put on a new skirt and tights for the first time. Okay, now you've got the visual.) So we race to the bathroom, and with no forethought at all, no sniff test, I just whip off the tiny princess' drawers. Only to discover that my darling had already taken care of both businesses, the second fresh on my hand and now all down her legs. Since she had been sick it was the messy-extra icky kind, so I kinda leaned her against my leg as I wiped up the offensive mess. When I get done with what I could see behind, I put her up on the potty, only to realize that the front needed cleaning too. Yech! After I get that all cleaned up, I start to notice a wet spot on my leg. I look down and realize that in her leaning, I got poop on my skirt. Nice. But being the resourceful (okay, lazy!) mom that I am, I decide to rinse off my skirt (hey, it was a brown print anyway), and move on with the day.

I get back to doing school, I am trying to kinda fan my skirt so the wet spot will dry, but I keep smelling poop. I decide to rewash my hands. Still smelling it. I decide to sniff my skirt (yes, I am a mother of three kids--way past being grossed out with the sniff test). I get a little whiff. Sniff the lining, stronger whiff. Lift up the skirt and lining and see that my problem is a patch of poop had soaked into my tights!! That was it, the final straw. Ran up, and changed my skirt and tights into jeans and socks. And that was my first day of casual skirt wearing.

Frankly, I am a little scared to try again . . .

Homemaking ABC's

Laughter Thoughts tagged me to do this fun alphabet meme. I will tag Momma Chronicles and The Knot and the Knest next, if they would like to play along!

Aprons- Y/N? Very rarely, usually just at Christmas time when I'm doing lots of cookie roll-outs.

Baking- Favorite thing to bake? Bread or cookies

Clothesline- Y/N? Nope, just an over-the-laundry room door hook to hang up the drip-dry clothes

Donuts- Ever made them? I remember making them with my Dad as a child. I have my Grandma's recipe, I should try them someday.

Everyday- One homemaking thing you do everyday? Make dinner for my family.

Freezer- Do you have a separate deep freezer? Yes out in the garage. Like Laughter Thoughts, I'd like a fridge out there too.

Garbage Disposal- Y/N? Nope, but we do have two of the handy four-legged ones.

Handbook- Y/N? I have a wallet and my cash envelope system always with me--usually in either my purse or the diaper bag.

Ironing- Love it or hate it? I hate it!!

Junk Drawer- Where is it? IT?? I have two! To the left of the fridge.

Kitchen- Design and decorating? Cheerio box yellow walls, white cabinets, and red oak Pergo floors--soon to be replaced by??? Any ideas?!

Love- What is your favorite part of homemaking? Clearing off the kitchen counters, it makes me feel like I got something done. I also love to de-clutter and throw away/give away things we no longer need or use!

Mop- Y/N? Yes, weekly, although I should do it daily!

Nylons- Wash by hand or in the washer? Gentle cycle in the washer, drip dry.

Oven- Do you use the window or open it to check? Open it to check, our oven seems to run hot, so I am constantly checking on whatever is in there, so I can rescue if needed.

Pizza- What do you put on yours? Pre-kids we used to love spinach and tomato . . . now I love hawaiian or "Cowboy" pizza from Papa Murphy's.

Quiet- What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment? Knit or read!

Recipe card box- Y/N? Yes, I have two! And a binder notebook full of my All Recipes favorites and other misc. recipes.

Style of house- Two story, stereotypical suburban home. The bright purple front door has grown on me!

Tablecloths and napkins- Y/N? Yes to both. I love vintage tablecloths especially from the 40's-50's eras, and paper napkins.

Under the kitchen sink- Trash can, cleaning supplies, recycling bag, extension cords, plant watering pitcher.

Vacuum- How many times a week? Once a week, if it needs it or not--HA!

Wash- How many loads do you do a week? 5-7 depending on if it's been a bed-changing week.

X's- Do you keep a list of things to do and cross them off? I like to, I aspire to, I used to! I love to cross things off of lists.

Yard- Who does what? My wonderful husband mows weekly and keeps up the sprinklers, but I usually do the weeding and planting.

ZZZ's- What is your last homemaking task for the day? I do a final visual sweep to make sure things are put away and ready for the next day.

I'm Four, Three, TWO!!

The tiniest princess celebrated her 2nd birthday on Saturday! (Thankfully the current flu/cold bug that has made itself at home in our family waited to hit her until yesterday.) She had a great day-opening presents, helping to supervise the decorating her caterpillar cake, and eating her choice of dinner: octopus hotdogs, rainbow jello and applesauce! However (even after all the helpful coaching) when you ask her how old she is she always starts with four and then works her way down to two. It's really cute.

Moving on . . .

It has been a quite the week around here. The eldest princess is still coughing, but back at swim lessons (her ear infection cleared up). Then about a week ago Princess #2 woke up with a fever and cough and that started her illness and what we thought was a recovery--until last night when she was up several times literally screaming her head off. The first time I went in to her she told me her cheek hurt, so I suggested sleeping on the other side. Then when Daddy checks on her the next screaming bout she tells him it's her ear. When he reports that back to me all I can think is "Great, there goes another week." Sure enough, after a doctor's visit today she has her first ear infection, Princess #1's throat is irritated and inflamed from all the coughing (about a month's worth), so she is on an inhaler of sorts to try and help that problem. Thankfully for now (and no, I'm not holding my breath-it's pointless) , Princess #3 just has a mild fever and a garden variety cold.

My Dad had a good comment today though, he said something to the effect of, "it's a good thing you are no longer caring for Janelle." And it's true--that has been a huge blessing, to just be able to care for my own little ones and not have the added headache of one more child to deal with. Of course, I had had my own plans with how my time was going to be spent after we were done watching her and it did not entail wiping noses and being sympathetic to the poor little princess laying on the couch!

I'm a little steamed . . .

Today started off just fine. Got all 4 kids to swim lessons on time, remembering the all important snacks and sippy cups for Princess #3. Then afterwards got everyone going the right direction at the same time! Made it up one flight of stairs, across to the second flight of stairs (while walking to second flight of stairs was told by a helpful mom that there is an exit from the basement to the front doors-so nice to know after the fact!). Got the stroller with the baby down along with Princess #2, and as I'm heading back up the stairs for #1 and #3, I hear these women telling Princess #1 that she is going to drop Princess #3 "and where is your mom?" "Her mom really should be here." "I'm trying to help the little one but she won't let me." I arrive in time to hear a sarcastic comment about my parenting. I rescue #1 who was doing as I asked her and trying to help a stubborn #3 down the stairs. I kindly say that my daughter is just fine as I am being informed of the neglect and danger that I put my youngest into, and finish carrying #3 down and ignore the rest of the comments that were being said as I hightailed it (as fast as one can with four kids) out of there.

Got to the van and just started to cry. I don't understand people like that. When I see a mom that is clearly doing the best she can and clearly has her hands full, my heart goes out to her, and if my own hands are free I offer help and if not at least a sympathetic smile. I just have to wonder did these women who were grandma-age, raise children? And if they did I have to wonder how on earth they turned out! Anyway it was one of those moments that I made a mental note--when I am older and done with the preschool years-I want to be sympathetic to those still in them because they are tough and unrelenting and a little encouragement is such an emotional boost as a mommy.

Anyway as I am typing all this out and feeling the "mad" and the hurt slip away, I remembered some kind words spoken to me when we first sat down at swim lessons this morning. An older man who takes his grandsons to the lessons told me that his son (who came to watch one day last week) was impressed that I managed to get four kids to swim lessons and that they were all so well-behaved. Well, I can take credit for three of the four and I proudly do!

The Backseat Strikes Again

On our way home from swimming lessons this morning, I overheard this interesting conversation, taking place in the back seat. My ears perked up, when I heard Princess#1, say to Princess #2, that "Daddy isn't your real Daddy."

Princess #2 agrees and says," That's right, God is our Father."

I interject, "Daddy is your real Dad." . . .

Then Princess #1 quickly says, "Yah, but God is our different father."

Princess #2 says, "He's our sky father."

I say, "Our Heavenly Father."

Princess #1 (in very patronizing tone, if she knew how to use the word "duh", she would have!), "Mama, heaven means sky."

Sometimes it's just better to let them have their own terminology!

Devotion Confusion

I bought a little preschoolers devotion book from the MOPS shop before Christmas and have been reading it at breakfast to the princesses. They love it, even the oldest, who is "probably too old" (her quote) for such things!

Well there was a little confusion this morning, on my part. Princess #2 kept yelling about a "commotion", so I come trucking in the dining room and find out out that the problem is that I forgot to read the "devotion" book. Princess #3 took up the chant yelling "Zoe, Pahker, Kate-LIN" (the characters in said book). I'm glad that I have them to remind me! And I'm glad that they are interested in learning more about God.

So tomorrow I won't have to panic when I hear there's a "commotion" . . .

Potty Training Woes . . . A Soon to Be Miniseries!

Brace yourselves for a flurry of blogging on the same subject! Potty training has begun in semi-earnest at the castle. The tiniest princess is being prepped and prodded to accomplish this feat! She is loving the sticker rewards and the "special" candy as it is dubbed in our home. It's just mommy that needs to be reminded to take her. We had a great day Sunday, she stayed dry for most of the day (except nap), so I was set for Monday! We didn't have the distraction of the baby to watch, so I was ready. But somehow the little one didn't get the memo. She kicked, screamed, generally made taking her to the potty so horrible that I let her win.

Yesterday was a good day. I managed to remember to take her to the bathroom(okay I set the timer, but I had to remember what the timer was for!), and she was agreeable. But today I keep forgetting to take her--too much with school and babysitting, life in general. I hate to say it, but we may have to do "commando" training (just for my sake!). Maybe a few puddles on the floor will remind me to take her! Of course this time of year isn't so great for that style of potty-training, but after talking to a gal at Bunco, who is training her daughter this way, it sounds like I just need to purchase some leg warmers!

So That's Why

While doing schoolwork this morning, the eldest princess wonders aloud, "Why is Sunday called Sunday?" Then answers her own question, "Because Jesus shines!"

I couldn't have answered it better myself.

Decompress Time

Well after a fun-filled two weeks off, reality has once again taken over! Back to school! Back to babysitting! Back to non-holiday eating habits! And really, it hasn't been as bad as I was anticipating.

I had A start up with school yesterday, just to kind of ease into it again since M was home to back me up with the little ones. And I started doing what we're calling "special" seatwork. This is seatwork that she does on her own, she gets to read it off the whiteboard and complete it by lunch time. She is over the moon about this plan for some reason. I don't think that she has realized that it really is extra work-nothing much special about it. But that will just be our little secret!!

And on another positive homeschooling note, G recognized some letters today and the sounds that went with! This is huge. She normally makes stuff up or acts like she didn't hear me, so I was really excited.

Little Miss R is enjoying her nail "polash" that I put on when she finished up her oatmeal this morning. She keeps stopping mid-sentence and admiring her nails.

So we're surviving post-Christmas fall-out for which I am grateful.

One Moment

If you live near the Princess' house, you might want to try and see the "Living Nativity" put on by Cathedral of Joy. We don't go every year, and you do have to sit through some weird little Christmas plays before getting out to see the nativity, but it is worth it.

We took the princesses out Sunday night to see it, and they were in awe of seeing Mary riding on a real donkey with Joseph along side her, watching the shepherds tending real sheep and donkeys, watching the wisemen come with their camels and gifts, gasping as Herod's soldiers came looking for the baby King. Even the tiniest princess was silent for a moment as we watched how it may have been. I think what moved me the most was thinking on what one gal shared at MOPS last week combined with seeing visually what Jesus' birth night may have been like. She shared how she had been thinking about Mary, and how Mary was just a teenager, and that she may have been mocked and made to feel ashamed because she became pregnant before she was married. Anyway, seeing "Mary" riding that donkey and thinking about how my back aches at the end of the day during pregnancy/labor without cross-country donkey rides, made me ache for her and what she must have felt like that night physically, not to mention emotionally.

For me it was very moving, a welcome reminder in this last frenzied week to contemplate the very real sacrifices that a young girl and her young husband made so that our Lord could be born as it was foretold in Isaiah.

Like I said, if you can, you might try and go, if nothing else for those last 15 minutes out in the cold remembering what Christmas is all about. . .

Pay Back

Every second Tuesday I get to look forward to not only MOPS, but Bunco that evening. So Tuesday came and went, had a great MOPS, very inspiring, had a great Bunco, lots of laughs and great fellowship, and then woke up Wednesday morning to my real life. . .

Why or maybe How is a better way to start this question. How do kids know when their moms have had a wonderful time or are totally relaxed before mom has even risen from slumber? Mine do anyway, and then like to take full advantage by either ruining my mood by being difficult and testing every boundary or by just plain being crabby. Hmmm. (Might be worth some tax dollars Uncle Sam.) Anyway, you can read where this is going, we had a rough day Wednesday. Even the unemotional, uncomplaining baby I watch was crabby. So when the baby's father came to get her just as I had taken off my referee shirt AGAIN and holding his cranky baby, and asked how the day had been, I was honest. (Not that I am not normally honest, I was just blunt, the day had been a day from "you know where".)

Well I must say that my honesty paid off somewhat. Long story short, but due to a surgery the baby's mom is unable to care for baby which is why I have her even though the mom is at home. Anyway, their housekeeper will now be "helping" me out by taking the baby Monday and Friday. Maybe I should press my luck and see if she wants three more to really "help" me out!

Christmas Fun

We got our tree on Friday afternoon and got it up that evening. It is our biggest ever . . . and smells so wonderful! The whole house just smells like Christmas, it's been such a treat. The girls had fun putting up their ornaments and "reminiscing" about when they got each one. R has been enjoying hanging and rehanging which ever ornament or candy cane is handiest. I have gotten a kick out of how sneaky she can be! Her new phrase is "Merry Cismas TO YOU". She yells the "to you"-very funny.

A and G are getting practice time in for their Christmas program which is coming up in a couple weeks. Some of them are sung correctly others not. And it has been hard to correct when they are being sung so earnestly.

LET IT SNOW!!

It snowed today. No more than an inch or two, but it was the wonderful wet, easily packed variety. Perfect for snowman building!! The girls and I had a great time making three snowmen. A and G have been in and out all day. And Murray is a real snow-loving dog. He has been having fun shoveling it with his nose and rolling around it.

M has just about got all the trim up in the living room and dining room! Yay! We're just under the one year mark. Now if we can just get time to paint the stairwell, we'll be done with that project officially.

Got a couple of the Christmas goodies done today. However one entire batch of candy cane cookies took a dive off the counter (with a little help) and was a total loss. I am over it now, but for about an hour I was ready to call off Christmas--at least the goodie making part of it. Oh well. Guess we'll try a different kind tomorrow.

One Day Overdue

M and I have been having conversations over the past, well, really month about how hectic and crazy things are and what we can/should do about it. So we decided that we should try to list out all the weekly chores and daily activities and see if we can figure out where the time is escaping to. Well, after he got all the stuff that we HAVE to do daily (like get dressed, fix meals, homeschool, etc.) he showed me that if we really manage our time well I would have an hour free in the morning and then possibly two hours before it was time to start dinner! Wow--three whole unused hours in the day (please feel free to read in your own sarcastic tone. . .)

Actually hearing that put things in perspective. No wonder I feel like my days melt into a heap of "got nothing done again". Because in reality how many days actually go according to plan. That spare hour in the morning gets sucks into cajoling the oldest to do school or changing diapers or getting snacks or (gasp!) checking email.

So we listed all the chores that we (read Princess Diaries) would like to get done weekly and set it up in Outlook. Yesterday I managed to knock two things off the list and make some Yule Kakka and was feeling kind of heady. Today when I check the email a list of chores pops up each with the caption of "one day overdue"! I need to change that setting right quick. I wonder what happens if I don't get to any of them this week. Hopefully it recycles weekly--so that by the time I finally clean my bathroom it won't say 90 days overdue!

R's Christmas List

Well our littlest sweetie, who has no idea what Christmas is or why her older sisters are so excited about it, has a list of her own! I asked her (after asking her older sister) what she wanted for Christmas and she answered without hesitation, "NEW SHOES"! Not only new shoes, but pretty new shoes! Very cute. So we will be finding a pair of pretty new shoes for our youngest . . .

Today R succombed to the stomach bug that has been plaguing our family for the past couple of weeks. I was hoping that she was going to avoid it, since G had recovered by Wednesday, but no such luck. Looks like I'll be missing church . . . again!

And to go back to Christmas again, after a shopping trip Friday, we just have one gift left to purchase for M's family. What a relief to be done with half of the shopping. My goal was to have the gifts done for his side and ready to ship by Thanksgiving and it is looking promising.

I am trying to pare down my Christmas goodie list to something a bit more realistic. But I must say I like my old stand-bys too much to let very many go in order to try some new recipes out. Hopefully I can include the older girls in the goodie making more this year and that it will keep their interest so we can get more done!

So It Begins

"Sues at?"(who's that?) "Why mommy?" are two new phrases that Miss R has perfected over the past week. You know the phrases that are so cute to start out with that you answer them carefully, making eye contact, really looking at what the kid is pointing at. . . then after the second day you glance and then just pick a name that will satisfy her curiosity. However this third one of mine is one sharp cookie I must brag. I glanced quickly at what she was showing me, saw it was a picture with Disney princesses on it, so I just randomly picked one to answer "sues at Mommy?" while wrist deep in raw chicken. And she starts yelling "no Mommy" "Riel, not no white" (Ariel not Snow White). I didn't know she knew the Disney princesses by sight! I knew she recognized "Cinderawla", but not the others. I guess the Disney indoctrination starts earlier with each subsequent daughter! So it begins . . .

Snaggletooth No More

A's Christmas list has a new #1: her two front teeth! The first tooth hung in there a LONG time, until finally she let me give it a gentle tug and out it came. (Her poor gums are still in recovery from that one!) And then after eating an apple just a few days later, her second front tooth went from kinda-sorta loose to snaggle tooth! It was hanging in there at the funniest angle, but she wouldn't let us take it out. We were calling her "snaggletooth", "snag", and any other deviations of it that we could come up with. She finally decided on Saturday night that I could help it out--whew.

She looks so cute with them missing. A bit vampire-ish at times, but still cute! Here are some pictures of her and Halloween, if you run your mouse over them you will see captions:

Can't We All Just Get Along?

As some of you know, I babysit my neighbor's daughter pretty much full time. And most days here lately, it has just been overwhelming. Not that this baby is such a pain, it's just one more drain on me and my time and my time with my kids. Trying to balance homeschooling, other activities, three kids, not to mention attempting to keep a clean (okay, the appearance of clean) house has been frustrating.

However in the past week I have noticed that my older two are picking up on my negative vibes toward the whole babysitting-thing. It's taken me a few days to feel convicted about this, but I do now. We've had a few days off from having the baby and it has been so nice.

But today we had her back and I was determined to set the attitude off for the day in the right direction. When the kids responded with a chorus of "oh not J" when I told them she would be over right away, I reminded them that baby doesn't get the chance to learn much about Jesus at her house and that this was a chance we had to share Jesus' love with her. Immediately after my little sermon-ette, I got tested. The phone rings it's the baby's mom, apparently she over-slept and is now running late. I felt my blood beginning to boil, all of my kids slept in today, but because I knew that she'd be over right away, I forced my tired body out of bed and got going much earlier than I wanted to! After a stern self-talk and a quick sarcastic "must be nice" to myself I moved on!

So now as I type, I can hear a chorus of "love your neighbor" (from Veggie tales) being sung to our little guest. God is good. He can even work through a sleep-deprived, frustrated mama!

A Day of Firsts

Today has been a day of firsts. A and G went to ECHO (a homeschool co-op) today for the first time. Both of them loved their classes! G had a great time in the preschool class and A had fun in Music, Science, Sign Language and PE. I am excited for them and for this opportunity.

M and I took R to Lowe's and met with a kitchen designer. She will come up with a design and cabinet suggestions for us hopefully as soon as next week. We'll see how that goes. I hope she can come up with a good design.

R and I were snuggling on the couch watching "people" as she puts it ("Little People" video), when she put her head on my lap and said "I wuff you". It took a second for me to recognize the words--she's never said them before. So of course I gave her a big hug and told her I loved her. What a sweet and special first!

Spelling Lessons

So, A is really into spelling and is really pretty good at it too. She is figuring out though, that English is full of pesky rules that contradict themselves. She is learning when to use "ck" or "ke" at the ends of words at school and then gets frustrated when she tries to apply the basic rules to other words! Thankfully she has a good sense of humor about it all and usually comments on why do we have to speak this language?

Today on our way home from Target, she asked me what a "chev-ro-LET" is. And of course kept repeating it until I notice that the truck that just passed me has "chevrolay" (phonetically speaking), spelled out on the tailgate. Ah-ha! Mommy has the answer. I tell her the correct pronunciation and she proceeds to question why cars have names, etc. So I tell her that our van aka "big blue Stu", is also aka "Pontiac Montana". After we get home and parked (AND DON'T YOU DARE TELL HER I TOLD YOU THIS--I WILL DENY ANY & ALL KNOWLEDGE OF IT!!), I overheard her ask "big blue Stu", if she could call him "Montana" sometimes! How cute is that?!

I have hope, maybe she's not 13 after-all!

Sew Fun

Well today has been great! We didn't plan anything, don't have to go anywhere, and we're taking advantage of it! The girls have been outside most of the day, M has been out in the shop and I've been sewing.

I don't think that I have sewed this much since G was about the age R is now. It stopped being fun, so I stopped doing it--mostly because of the extra help, and of course a new baby doesn't make finding extra time very easy, and of course once you do find it, you use it for sleeping.

Today however, I finished a dress in bright purple with lime polka-dots for G, a ruffled skirt with froggy fabric for G, and a dress for A out of a pretty plaid flannel (that I cut out a long time ago--maybe two years ago) and it still fits!! Behold the power of making something yourself, you can fudge the seam allowances and make it fit! Now that I'm heady with success, I think I will cut out some bloomers for R and two of her little friends. And with all hope they will be done in time for the girls to get some wear out of them!

Here is a picture of the finished knitting project, R's dress. I finshed it a week or more ago. It has a cute (well I think it's cute), gingham ribbon around the empire waist.Thankfully it's on the big side, 'cause this kid will be wearing it non-stop once it fits a tiny bit better! :)

One of those days

Well, it has been one of those days, I'd say weeks but it's only Tuesday and I better not tempt fate to make it into "one of those weeks".

The day started off normal enough, a little bickering from the older girls, a relatively peaceful breakfast until G realized that Janelle was coming over on Daddy's birthday (oh the horror). She continued to give plenty of vocal complaining, bad-mouthing, that she is so good at until Janelle arrived. I managed to get breakfast dishes in the dishwasher and check email before school-time all with peace. I gave up keeping the dogs separated because Murray would not leave the screen door alone (he is systematically shredding the screen), but would soon regret this decision.

Got A started with school, good. Got G started with "school", good. R happy with sweet streets, Janelle down for nap, good good. Phone rings, it's a friend from MOPS, while chatting with her, I glance out the window to see the dogs excavating the Aspen tree! Argh! Yell at them, they feign innocence. Check on the girls with school, they are fighting and A has done one part of one page of seatwork. ARGH! Then R decides she is no longer happy and must scream and cry. Hang up call, look out the window and there are the dogs digging up another part of the yard. Double Argh! I yelled at them, got R a banana, and then squared my shoulders and marched to the school room. A had done one page of 4 pages of seatwork, and very poorly at that. Triple ARGH!! Steam is beginning to shoot out of my ears uncontrollably, however for once I ignore it and get the baby up from her nap.

Went back to the school room to find A happily finishing her last page of school work. (The following to be read with dripping sarcasm please!) Wow! Only one hour to do four pages and the final three done in 10 minutes. It is a miracle!

We take a sanity break since it is now just about time for lunch. Look out the window (when will I stop doing that!) in time to see Murray make off with Jackson's radio collar. I race out, grab the collar, see it is beyond repair and almost give into the violent thoughts that are raging through my mind. I stopped only when I look up and see my princesses on the deck watching the scene unfold!

So I get lunch on the table for my girls. Janelle doesn't want to stop playing, so I decide to eat mine while it's warm. The girls are all happy, pleasant (not burping), we are enjoying a good conversation. I decide to try and coax Janelle to come and eat, just as I get to her she starts throwing up. Not just a bit of spit up, but an honest to goodness mess! Yuck!! It's bad enough to clean up when it's your own kid, but trust me, about ten times worse when it's not. Thankfully her mom was working from home and rushed over. Now I am praying that it was cold-related and not a stomach flu. . .

Now you know all about my morning, I can only hope that this afternoon will be better. Thankfully there is ice cream cake to look forward to for dessert and I didn't put all the carmel brownies out at small group last night, so I have a little stash to get me through til dessert time!

Anniversary

Well, not only does today mark the terrible anniversary of 9-11-01, but it also marks the anniversary of the day I first attended MOPS. This morning as I was getting ready to head to church to set-up for MOPS, I was hit with the realization that 9-11-01, was the first time I ever went to MOPS!

I remember debating if I should even go, would I even need to go, would there even be MOPS, after all these tragedies were happening right now! But I'm so glad that I followed God's prompting and went. That I swallowed my pride and came out of my shell a bit to meet some new people. I have been blessed by this ministry ever since! I met people that attended First Baptist, and I think those relationships encouraged my husband and I to end our church hunt and settle in there. Thru MOPS I have made dear friends, one especially stands out, as God gave her to me just when we needed eachother most, I think.

Anyway, feeling nostalgic and glad that I have a positive memory of 9-11-01, when there are so many other sad ones tied with this date.

Meme Theme: Three

I've been tagged by Laughter Thoughts, so here goes my quick three

Three nicknames— P.B.(a nickname from my hubby), mama, Sarah-Rabbit

Three people that make me laugh—my girlfriends (especially after a long day), my girls, Mr. Monk (a loveable TV character)

Three things that I love—knitting & finishing a knitting project, my princesses and their daddy

Three things I hate—unorganization, clutter (kind of goes with the first), second-hand smoke

Three things I don't understand—how my kids somehow sense when I've been up late the night before and are up extra early and behave extra cranky; why you would complain when your mom tries out new recipes, even when you complained about the old ones; why each toy or thing that the other sibling has is so much better/prettier/more exciting than the one you've happily been playing with all along!

Three things on my floor—two flopped dogs, towel, book bag

Three things I am doing right now—typing, wondering what all the thumping is when it's supposed to be quiet time, thinking how nice it would be to shop with an unlimited budget--just once!

Three things I can do—knit (just finished a dress for R), sew (just made G a dress), homeschool my girls

Three ways to describe my personality— responsible/conscientious, friendly/outgoing (MOPS has definitely stretched my comfort zone in this area and I'm all the better for it!), optomistic

Three favorite foods— Seafood fettuccine from Olive Garden, anything from Bamboo Garden, and I have a favorite chicken/dumpling recipe--come on cold weather!!

Three foods I do not like—falafil (we made some once . . .), spaghetti o's, canned vegetable beef soup

Three beverages I drink regularly—diet pepsi, milk, water

Three shows I watch—Gilmore Girls, House, M.D., Mr. Monk (all from Netflix), I have a really hard time watching "regular" TV now, I am spoiled w/dvd's --no commercials!

I will tag The Knot and the Knest next!

He Earned His Keep-Praise the Lord!

Well this post is two part. . . just last night M and I were talking in bed as the cats went yowling by (AGAIN!) about how nice it would be to de-pet the house. We have this conversation, oh about weekly! Murray is in the horrible, chewing, digging adolescent puppy stage and Buzzy (G's cat), don't get us started.

M had to be up early this morning to go to a breakfast at church and then when I got up with R a little later, there was a little present for me--a dead mouse courtesy of Buzzy. After my mild heart attack, I praised him lavishly for the mighty hunter that he is (this is the 2nd one he's caught). I knew there was a mouse lurking somewhere under the dishwasher/kitchen sink cabinet as I had seen his tiny calling cards the other day, but hadn't caught it! So for once one of our pets earned his keep.

And as for the second part of the post G has started using the phrase "Praise the Lord". It is so funny. Last night I finished up a dress for her, minus the buttons, and when G saw it, she said "PTL that you finished it". And then as we fished for buttons in the button box a minute later, she says "PTL we have some many buttons". We'll see how long this phrase lasts, I must say it's better than "I hate" or "stupid", which seem to be the norm more often than not!
